The Hangover 1.18.09

So we come into this new week wondering a few things, how are the Cardinals the NFC Champions and what happened to Joe Flacco? The Cardinals punched their ticket this afternoon with a convincing 32-25 Win over Philadelphia today in the NFC Championship game. Larry Fitzgerald today cemented himself as one of the most dynamic receivers in the NFL with his game-changing performance of 9 catches for 152 yards and 3 Touchdowns. Fitzgerald today proved that he alone could lead the Cardinals to yet another victory, and is in position to do so again next week should he put up another performance like the one today. In the other Championship game, the Steelers made Joe Flacco show his experience by forcing 3 interceptions, with one being returned for a touchdown along with his 13-30 passing for only 141 yards. Hey Joe, next time change your diaper before you go to the playoffs because today you really stunk it up. The Steelers won the game 23-14 and will be going to their 2nd super bowl in 4 years. So there we have it, 2 weeks from today Super Bowl XLIII with the Arizona Cardinals matching up against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Hmm, I can’t help but notice this has the feel of the World Series. One team nobody expected to be there opposing an opponent who most expected to get there. Well unlike baseball, I’m picking the upset. Cardinals should take this one, but not by much giving them their first Super Bowl title in franchise history. Dang 66 years was too long.

So did anyone catch the Lebron James commercial. There had been a lot of hoopla and hype for the last few weeks about a big announcement on 1.18.09 and that we would have to brace ourselves. Well in case you didn’t catch it, here’s the video.

Oh and maybe it’s just me, but I am getting the vibe that Peyton Manning and Lebron James are somewhat competing for the title of the most marketable athlete. I mean Lebron has that other State Farm commercial as well as his newest Nike Commercial. But, Peyton did have some very funny commercials with Mastercard. #1 #2 #3 and his very most recent #4. His appearance on Saturday Night Live was hilarious too. Check the videos here and here

In other news, the much anticipated film Notorious came out friday with much hype. Apparently this movie is a big hit with many people showing up at the box office to see it. So basically i must be one of the few hip-hop fans who isn’t in too much rush to go see this flick. Hmm, maybe i should check it out.

On a very good note for all of us baseball fans, pitchers and catcher report to camp in just 24 days. Big news for all of us anticipating what is going to go down this season. yet there is one big problem, many big names stars such as Manny Ramirez, Ken Griffey Jr., and Adam Dunn (to name a few) are still free agents. Along with these players still being free-agents, we have the 2nd installment of the World Baseball Classic this year and from the looks of it, the USA is in trouble. They lost Alex Rodriguez to the Dominican Republic and they seem to lack a lot of punch in their lineup that they had in 2006. Hey, my guess is we shock the world and make the Semifinals, whoo hoo!

This should be a good week, I make my return to Santa Barbara and get to enjoy one last week of doing nothing before school starts! Maybe this week some of those big name free agents get signed.

BART Cop Arrested on Murder Charges

The Hoopla in Sports

So as we venture into tomorrow’s big day, and by big day i mean the deadline for underclassmen to declare their names for the draft, there are a lot of big headlines hitting the news. Before bowl season started, Colt McCoy declared his loyalty to Texas and said he would be back for his senior season. Along with McCoy, Tim Tebow declared he would return to Florida in attempt to win a 3rd National Title in 4 years, along with possibly winning his second Heisman Trophy. Today, his biggest competitor Sam Bradford, declared he would return for his junior season. Even though many thought Bradford was the most NFL ready Quarterback in college football while putting up insane number, he feels like there is more to accomplish, including a national title which he failed to achieve this year. Another big name who has decided to stay in school is USC Safety Taylor Mays. Mays was one of the leaders of a dominate USC defense which by many was considered one of the best in the country. His return will help stabilize a defense which will take many hits coming into the 2009 season.

Some big names to have declared for the 2009 NFL Draft include Michael Crabtree who acheievd many awards in his 2 years as a wideout at Texas Tech. Crabtree is projected to be an early first round pick in the upcoming draft. Along with Crabtree, Georgia’s Knowshon Moreno and Matthew Stafford have declared for the draft. The two led the SEC in major categories at their respective positions, with Moreno leading the SEC in rushing and Stafford leading the SEC in passing.

Now there is the speculation about Mark Sanchez. Many scouts and sources believe that the USC signal caller will declare early for the draft, while his father says that he is undecided. Sanchez definitely had an up and down season, starting with the knee injury during the summer and culminating with his monster game in the Rose Bowl against Penn State. Even though he only had one full season as a starter, many think Sanchez is best suited to declare early, due to the amount of big names who will be in the draft next year, along with the past experience of what happened to Matt Leinart when he stayed for his senior season after winning the Heisman. If Sanchez declares, he could easily be an early first round pick with quarterbacks being at a high demand for this April’s draft. Soon enough we will have a verdict, and because I am a huge USC fan, i hope he stays. Nonetheless, USC could be a serious title contender next season with or without Sanchez. Pete Carroll always finds a way to get it done.

On another note, oft-injured receiver Vidal Hazelton will transfer to Cincinnati. Leaving the USC Trojans with another offensive hit.

Something Interesting i came across while browsing on

The Hangover 1.11.09

What a week this has been. Florida won it’s 2nd BCS National Title in 3 years. Therefore making Tim Tebow’s claim as one of the most dominant and explosive players in college football history. Today he announced that he would forgo the NFL Draft and return for his senior season. Which brings up the thought, could Tim Tebow win a 3rd National Title and possibly a second Heisman?

The NFL Playoffs resumed this week, with 3 out of 4 Road teams winning games this week. It started yesterday with the Baltimore Ravens beating the Tennessee Titans in a physical game which came down to the wire. In the late game the Arizona Cardinals dominated the Carolina Panthers on the road, 33-13. Today we saw the defending Super Bowl Champs the New York Giants lose at home 23-11 to the Philadelphia Eagles. In the final divisional series game, we finally saw the home team prevail, with the Pittsburgh Steelers roll over the San Diego Chargers 35-24. Which brings up an interesting Championship weekend. We have the Arizona Cardinals hosting, yes that is not a typo, the Philadelphia Eagles and the Pittsburgh Steelers hosting the Baltimore Ravens. Considering i have not done too well on my early season picks for the playoffs, im going to go along the safe route and pick the Steelers and the Cardinals. One upset and one guarantee. Hopefully this will pan out, and then the Steelers capture their 2nd Super Bowl victory in 4 years.

In the NBA, the Celtics are stuggling, (finally) and the Lakers are rolling. So why couldn’t this happen last year in the finals. It should be interesting how this next month plays out until the All-Star break. Lebron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers proved a lot to me when they dominated the Celtics at home on friday. Highlights Here. So at this point, my NBA Finals picks have changed from Celtics vs. Lakers to Cavs vs. Lakers. I just don’t think Boston has the bench to get them all the way and Lebron James is just too determined to win a ring.

The Oakland Athletics signed Jason Giambi to a one year deal. Wait? Is this the same Jason Giambi that 7 years ago we were all calling a sellout, because he signed a lucrative deal with the Yankees and left A’s fans hating him? The same Giambi who admitted to taking steroids? Hmm, don’t quite understand this one yet. I am open to the idea of bringing a little offense in, but I didn’t think it meant Jason Giambi. Hey, we actually might have a good offense, a healthy Chavez, Matt Holliday, and Jason Giambi all basically added to that lineup. Plus the Angels took a few hits in the offensive side of their ballclub. If the A’s get some pitching who knows, the AL West could be up for grabs.

Elsewhere in the sporting world, there was much more hoopla about the final rankings. Many people have complaints about the final rankings, well honestly each of the top 4 teams have a case for why they should be the best in the land. Yes, Florida won it all, but there should be a playoff. Currently there is no option for it so guess what, we can’t do anything about it. For the time being we can all just say what if and hope that they adopt a better system in the future. Because at this point, the BSC, oops in mean BCS, needs to go. But in case you still can’t get over it.Check this out!

Anyways, hope this weekend wasn’t too much for everyone. I came across the phenomenon known as MLB Network and I’m impressed, now only if i can get it in my apartment…

Tim Tebow leads Florida to 2nd BCS National Title in 3 Years

Tim Tebow throws a pass during the FedEx BCS National Championship Game.

Tim Tebow throws a pass during the FedEx BCS National Championship Game.

January 8, 2009- Tim Tebow made a promise to the Media and all of the fans after the loss to Ole Miss.

“To the fans and everybody in Gator Nation. I’m sorry, extremely sorry. We had hoped for an undefeated season. That was my goal, something Florida has never done here. But i promise you one thing, a lot of good will come out of this. You will have never seen any player in the entire country play as hard as I will play the rest of the season and you have never see someone push their team as I will push everybody the rest of the season. And you will never see a team play harder than we will the rest of the season. God Bless.”

Such powerful words from one man. Definitely showed off during the rest of the season as the Gators won the remainder of their games to capture the BCS National Championship. Florida (13-1) used its suffocating defense and rode a big game by Tim Tebow, who threw for 231 yards and 2 Touchdowns while running for 109 yards. Oklahoma seemed to never have an answer defensively for “Superman”, the nickname Tim Tebow has received from his teammates. Tim Tebow now boasts an impressive resume with 2 National Titles and a Heisman trophy in 3 short years of college, while also setting many SEC and NCAA records in the process. Should he return to school Florida could once again be very dangerous.

On the other side, Oklahoma is very quickly developing a reputation as a team which cannot win the big game. In their last 5 BCS Bowl appearances, Oklahoma has lost every single one. Yes, there were some very interesting circumstances to each loss. In 2004, they were outplayed by a dominant LSU team and lost 21-14. The following year they traveled to the very site where tonight’s game took place, and took on the USC Trojans. On this night Oklahoma was blown out by one of the great USC teams of the decade which included Matt Leinart, Reggie Bush, Lendale White, Lofa Tatupu, and Frostee Rucker. Oklahoma then didn’t make the BCS the following year in 2005, but they returned in 2006 and lost a thriller to Boise State on the statue of liberty play 43-42. Last year Oklahoma ran into West Virginia and their fast, explosive spread run attack which featured Pat White, Noel Devine, and Steve Slaton. West Virginia ran for 349 yards and won the game 48-28. This has definitely been the Achilles heel of Oklahoma in BCS games. Coming up clutch and finishing the season on a high note.

Now this brings up a very interesting dilemma. Does USC or Texas deserve a chance at the National Title. Should college adopt a +1 method. Texas did beat Oklahoma on neutral turf. USC on the other hand beat 2 top 10 teams as well as going 4-1 against the Pac-10 teams who all won bowl games this year. USC had a very dominating defense while Texas used a balanced attack. I think both of these teams could have easily given Florida a run for their money and maybe even have beaten them. USC was physical enough on D with enough big men to stop Tim Tebow and they were fast enough and athletic enough to counteract Florida’s playmakers. Texas on the other hand had a good enough offense to challenge Florida’s D and could have given them different looks than Oklahoma did tonight. But hey, we can only wish that this happened. We will have to sit around and hope that College Football wises up and intergrates a playoff system to therefore give major teams a chance at the National Championship. But on one more not, Congrats to Florida. USC will be there next year.
