The Epic Season Finale!

Final Day of the Season! 2 days til the #postseason (via

Today is HUGE. I can’t even describe how much this day means to baseball. Not only will the AL West division be decided this afternoon, but the AL East crown is yet to be decided. Along with Miguel Cabrera’s pursuit of the first triple crown since 1967, there is plenty of drama in the tank for the last day of the regular season.

A’s celebrate after taking the lead in yesterday’s game. Can they pull of the unthinkable and win 6 straight to take the division?

First things first, we check out the AL West division race, which surprisingly has come down to the final game of the season. The Oakland Athletics, seemingly everyone’s cinderella team and story of the year, have came back from a 13 game deficit on June 30th, to tie the division on the penultimate day of the season. Heck, even the A’s thought they were done when they lost the opener in a 4 game series in Texas last Monday, to fall 5 games back with 9 to play. But somehow someway, these Oakland A’s have fought back, going 7-2 since then to tie for the division lead. It’s insane to think that, the Texas Rangers have been in 1st place since April 9th, and that a team like Oakland is challenging them for the crown.  It’s just amazing to think that today, October 3rd 2012, on game 162 the A’s and Rangers will be playing for the AL West crown. The winner will walk away with 94 wins and the AL West crown, possibly the No. 1 seed in the playoffs, with the loser remaining with 93 wins and the Wild Card. Even after this game culminates, they will have to wait for the end of the Red Sox-Yankees and the Orioles-Rays games.

Raul Ibanez and Nick Swisher celebrate after tying the game in the 9th. Can the Yankees win the division today or will their rivals spoil the party?

Those Red Sox-Yankees and Orioles-Rays games carry a lot of weight with the playoffs. We already have the team set for the playoffs, but we have no idea where to put them. The only team which knows what is going to happen is the Detroit Tigers, who have the worst record of the 5 playoff teams, and they get to sit back and watch the drama unfold, even miss the Wild Card play-in game that the 2nd place team in both the AL West and AL East will be playing in. Makes for a lot of drama, which a lot of us will definitely be tuning in for. It’s the kind of drama that reminds us of March Madness, tuning back and forth between games, hoping to get the latest update.

Miguel Cabrera is in position to win baseball’s Triple Crown for the first time since 1967.

Also in the American League, Miguel Cabrera is in pursuit of the first triple crown in 45 years when Carl Yastrzemski pulled off the feat in 1967. Currently, Cabrera leads the AL in every category with a .331 BA/44 HR’s/139 RBI, and by most people’s opinion, is a lock for the American League MVP award. The only statistic in which Cabrera might, just might lose the grip on is the home run lead. He currently is one ahead of Josh Hamilton, who is in Oakland for the winner take all scenario. But the way the both have been playing as of late, we might as well give the crown to Miggy along with the MVP. Remember, this is the guy who moved to 3rd base this season to make way for Prince Fielder at 1st. I tip my hat to Cabrera for this team move, which in the long run is going to have him immortalized for the season he had.

All the drama, the excitement, and the unpredictability. Like last year, everything will be decided by the end of the night, with 2 simultaneous games going to decide the final seeding. Should make for a wild finish. I’m excited to see where it goes. This amazing momentum is setting things up for an exciting postseason, let’s just see how it unfolds!
