Hunt for October: September 21, 2012

Countdown to the #postseason, 14 Days (via MLB.com)

WELCOME TO FALL! Wait, why am I excited about that? Anyways, we are exactly 2 weeks away from the start of the postseason and I AM excited about that! Perfect time to welcome my Oakland A’s into town for a huge 3 game series with the New York Yankees. But a trip to New York couldn’t be complete without a trip to the MLB Fan Cave correct? That’s where A’s pitchers A.J. Griffin and Jerry Blevins came into the mix. Both whom were here to show us their expertise on the Bernie Lean phenomenon that has taken over not just Oakland, but the whole country. In Case you haven’t seen it, here’s the link or watch the video below!

But along with meeting a few fellow fans, they taught us how to do the #BernieLean and even signed some autographs.

Ok ok, enough about the A’s. Well not really, they are playing a huge 3 game set this weekend against the Yankees. Tied with the Orioles for the Wild Card, they can unfortunately help the team they are trying to separate from, as long as they beat the Yankees. Speaking of those Orioles, who share the top spot in the AL Wild Card, they head to Boston for the weekend, to play the reeling Red Sox. Now the Red Sox aren’t just laying over just yet, but they are not the same team from April.

Over in the AL Central, the division leading Chicago White Sox head to Southern California to take on the Angels in a 3 game set. The A’s and Tigers will definitely be scoreboard watching for this series. As the White Sox currently lead the Detroit Tigers by 2 games, and the A’s lead the Angels by 4.5 games. Those very Tigers, who lost the last game of a 3 game set to the A’s, take on the last place Twins this weekend. The hope is that some of these games this weekend start to clear up some of the AL playoff picture. The Rangers, owners of the biggest cushion of any team, head to Seattle for a 3 game set, looking to stay scorching hot after they won the last 2 games in Los Angeles.

Across the way in the Senior Circuit, the Washington Nationals and Cincinnati Reds both clinched playoff berths last night. It was the first for the Washington Nationals since they moved to DC, and the first for the Reds since 2010. Now that those 2 teams have a berth, it leaves 7 teams fighting for the 2nd Wild Card spot. But when you look at the standings again, you realize that realistically only 3, maybe 4 teams are fighting for those spaces. Hey, you have to love how the addition of the second Wild Card kept more competition in the race this late in the season.

Also in the National League, the San Francisco Giants lowered their magic number to 3, closing in on their first playoff berth since going all the way back in 2010. But that is not the only interesting news out of San Francisco, they just announced that Melky Cabrera will NOT be elgible for the batting title this season. In a statement , Cabrera said he had “no wish to win an award that would be tainted,” and that he “believe[d] it would be far better for someone more deserving to win.” Good to hear he’s made some positive strides forward, especially after his scummy move trying to make the shady website. Glad to see the Giants won’t activate him for the playoffs as well, looks like they want a little good baseball karma coming back towards them.

I am excited for the weekend ahead, there is a lot at stake this weekend before the final push, the real contenders might seperate themselves from the pretenders, or like I said yesterday, “Nothing will get solved”. All I have to say is, it’s September baseball, when has it ever been disappointing?
